Wi-Fi vs Bluetooth

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are designed to coexist in the network, and although they certainly have overlapping applications, each has its distinct zones of advantage. There are some biggest differences between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Bluetooth is lower powered, which means its signal can only go short distances (up to 30 feet). 802.11 technologies can cover your home, and in some cases more, depending on the antenna that you use. Bluetooth is designed as a replacement of cables: that is, trying [...]

Implementing a Virtual Private Network (VPN)

VPN hardware and software technology has evolved into two distinct categories:gateways and firewalls. Gateways allow individual LANs to connect to the Internet. They can perform VPN-related tasks, as well, such as encrypting and decrypting data transferred through the gateway. The gateway physically connects each LAN to the transport lines used for Internet access. Gateways include software that enables the network administrator at each site to manage the network. Anyone attached to the LAN [...]

Voice over IP (VoIP) on the Internet

The Internet is often referred to as a network of networks. The fact of the matter is that the Internet is just another network, albeit with an enormous and global reach. You can access the Internet through the public switched network (PSTN), your wireless personal digital assistant (PDA), or your WiFi notebook at the coffee shop nearest you. You can use your broadband link to access data, voice, and video at home. Your company can access the Internet through any of the dedicated transport [...]

The DNS (Domain Name System) and DNS namespace

In order to understand DNS, you need to understand the DNS namespace.A namespace is an area that can be resolved.A postal address on  a letter uses a namespace that contains a ZIP code, state, city, street address, and name.Because all letters follow this namespace, your mail reaches only you, out of the millions of possible addresses. To resolve the namespace used on a piece of mail, you start by examining the ZIP code, then the state , and then the city. This process narrows the [...]

DHCP – Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a server service that dynamically assigns or leases IP addresses and related IP information to network clients. At first glance, this may not seem like an important task. However you have to remember that, on a TCP/IP network, each network client must have a unique IP address and an appropriate subnet mask.Without these items,a client cannot communicate on the network. For example, if two clients have the same IP address, neither will be able to [...]

Active Directory

The Active Directory is Microsoft’s answer to directory services. The Active Directory organizes information about real network objects such as users, printers, applications, etc. – so users can find the resources they need.Users do not have to keep track of which servers holds which resource, or where a particular printer resides. The Active Directory lists the information, is completely searchable, and provides a standard folder interface so users can find what they need on the network. In [...]

Everyday in your office, you turn your computer on,open your e-mail to check messages, open your browser to  discreetly read news from the internet, etc.Behind the scene, there is one device or equipment that makes all those things possible. That’s the router. For non-technical person, router is probably not the most famous device in the digital world.Internet, the global network of computers, exists because of the router. What is a router? In computing, a router is a networking  [...]

Computer Networks

A computer network comprises computers or network-accessible devices — and sometimes other peripheral devices such as printers — connected in a way that they transmit data between participants. Computer networks have been commonplace in offices for nearly 20 years, but with the advent of reasonably priced wireless networks, computer networks are becoming increasingly common in homes. Now we mere mortals can share printers, share the Internet, play multi-player video games, and stream video [...]
